HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Criminology and Police Administration was established in the academic year 2018–19. As one of the emerging social sciences which offer an insight into the nature of crime and its effects on society, this discipline helps to understand and analyze the traditional crimes as well as modern day crimes, process of victimization, crime prevention and the Criminal Justice System by applying various Criminological theories, with this thought in mind, the department was established. Currently there are 7 faculties under a facilitator and around 400 students enrolled in the department.

 

ABOUT THE COURSE

The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Police Administration is a 3 year (6 Semester) regular programme offered under the University of Madras. The program’s goal is to provide students with a learning experience that will help

instill a deep interest in the subject; develop a broad and balanced knowledge base and an understanding of key criminological concepts, principles and theories; and equip students with the appropriate tools of analysis to tackle problems in the field. The course will develop students’ ability to understand the various forms of conventional and emerging forms of crimes; the approaches required to handle relational criminal behaviour; and to draw appropriate inferences from them. Provide students with the knowledge and skillset that would enable them to undertake further studies in Criminology and related areas or in multi-disciplinary areas.

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

A student is eligible to join the course if they have completed a course equivalent to 10+2, or pre-university in any group with an overall grade point average of 50%, including languages.

 

VISION

To combine foundational knowledge of Criminal Justice & Psychology with a critical understanding of its institutions, processes and operation. Students learn how social forces influence law-making, approaches to Criminal

Justice, perceptions and experiences of the Criminal Justice System; and how, in turn, Criminal Justice trends influence society.

 

MISSION

Prepares students for careers in Criminal Justice and related fields by applying multi-disciplinary and comparative social science to understand, predict and explain crime and contribute to the development of public policy within urban communities.

Using an active learning approach, the department seeks to develop its students intellectually and ethically, while providing them with a keen appreciation for the complexities of crime, and public and private efforts to make communities safer and ensure justice.

 

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

 

The Bachelor’s degree in Criminology in its rightful essence offers courses related to Crime, Criminal and the society’s reaction for the crime. It is multi- disciplinary course which applies the field of sociology, psychology and law to the concept of Crime. Varied subjects are included to ignite young minds towards serving the community with passion and integrity. Along with the theoretical input, Institutional visits to Police Stations, Fire and Rescue Stations, Courts and Prisons are organized. Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Special lectures, Social activities and extra-curricular activities have been organized to showcase the need to serve the society differently.
