DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS WITH COMPUTER APPLICATION

VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Aspires to the highest standards of excellence in teaching and service.

Department strives to earn regional recognition for its expertise in the field of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics.

A source for the promotion of problem solving, analytical thinking and utilizing technology.

To produce high quality mathematics majors well prepared to enter the work force or pursue higher education.

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department serves three main groups of students - future educators, mathematics majors, other majors which employ mathematics with.

We encourage them to develop problem-solving abilities which transcend the confines of the field of mathematics.

We share and promote the belief that mathematics holds an important place in the history of humanity and a valuable one in the future of all human beings.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Mathematics was established in 1972.The department was started with the aim of imparting knowledge and mathematical skills to young aspiring minds. The objective of the department is to coach and demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical concepts, modeling of complex phenomena, enhance problem solving skills and decision making capabilities to the students. Mathematics makes the leaner to think a lot. Keeping this in mind, the staff members do not merely share information with the students but strive to create the necessary environment for them to think. The objective of the department:

To improve students’ willingness to solve problems and make them aware of problem solving strategies.

To instil problem solving ability.

To assess their performance at continuous intervals.

To identify potential of each student and to develop the same.

To develop the analytical and logical skills of the student.

In the academic 2012-2013 the new course MATHS WITH COMPUTER APPLICATIONS was introduced.

The objective of introducing Mathematics with Computer application

 Build and enhance computational skills necessary in today’s society.

 Develop the students’ ability to understand, develop the mathematical concepts both numerically and graphically and enhance problem solving skills.

 Encourage and reinforce the critical thinking skills of the students.

 Develop the students’ ability to intelligently communicate mathematical results in both written and oral format.

 To encourage contemplation of latest scientific research techniques in the field. In the academic 2019-2020 the M.Sc Mathematics was introduced.

PROGRAMME OUTCOME

Students majoring in Mathematics attain proficiency in

PO 1 PROGRAMME GOALS:

Produce professional graduate who will:

 Be well grounded in the basic manipulative skills level of algebra, geometry, trigonometry

and calculus.

 Develop an understanding of the underlying structures of mathematics (i.e) sets, relations

and functions, logical structure and the relationships among them.

PO 2 CRITICAL THINKING:

The ability to identify, reflect upon, evaluate, integrate, and apply different types of

information and knowledge to form independent judgments. Analytical and logical thinking and the

habit of drawing conclusions based on quantitative information.

PO 3 PROBLEM SOLVING:

The ability to assess and interpret complex situations, choose among several potentially

appropriate mathematical methods of solution, persist in the face of difficulty, and present full and

cogent solutions that include appropriate justification for their reasoning.

PO 4 EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:

The ability to communicate and interact effectively with different audiences, developing their

ability to collaborate intellectually and creatively in diverse contexts, and to appreciate ambiguity and

nuance, while emphasizing the importance of clarity and precision in communication and reasoning.

PO 5 VERSATILITY:

The versatility to work effectively in a broad range of analytic, scientific, government,

financial, health, technical and other positions.

PO 6 BROAD BACKGROUND:

Have a broad background in Mathematics and Statistics, an appreciation of how its various

sub-disciplines are related, the ability to use techniques from different areas, and an in-depth

knowledge about topics chosen from those offered through the department.

PO 7 CAREER

Become involved with professional organizations and will network with successful former

graduates of our programs. Such exposure will aid them in establishing professional contacts, in

gaining insight about future employment prospects, and in tailoring their education to complement

their career goals.

CAREER IN MATHEMATICS IN INDIA

Mathematics as a subject has a huge scope to make a career for both in Government & Non-

Government sectors.

GOVT JOBS IN INDIA

 RESERVE BANK OF INDIA :

RBI recruits statistical research officer for the purpose of the statistical data analysis

and research work.

 PROFESSORS IN COLLEGE & UNIVERSITIES

 RESEARCHER:

Mathematics as a core subject has various dimensions in the field of research. Some

government organizations recruit mathematics students for various research fields. Also

after M.Sc in mathematics they can pursue P.hD through GATE, NET, NBHM. Also apply for

TIFR, IISC, ISI, CMI, IISER for PhD in mathematical field.

 COMBINED DEFENCE SERVICE:

Indian Air force, Naval Academy recruits Mathematics graduates for different posts in

defence through UPSC exam.

 PUBLIC SECTOR AND BANK:

A mathematics graduate can also apply in govt bank for the post officer in banks.

 PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS IN MATHEMATICS

 OPERATION RESEARCH ANALYST:

Operations research has been defined as an interdisciplinary branch of applied

mathematics and formal science that uses advanced analytical methods such as

mathematical modelling, statistical analysis and mathematical optimization to arrive at

optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems.

Eligibility: M.Sc in Mathematics with specialisation operation research.

 MATHEMATICIAN:

Mathematician is a person whose primary area of study or research is mathematics.

Mathematician are concerned with particular problems related logic, space, transformations,

numbers and more general ideas which encompass these concepts. They do research, come

up with problems and solutions, etc.

 COMPUTER SYSTEMS ANALYST:

Professionals in this field use IT tools to help enterprises of all sizes archive their goals.

Most systems analysts work with specific types of computer systems- for example, business,

accounting, and financial systems or scientific and engineering systems to prepare cost-

benefit and return – on- investment analysis to help management decide whether

implementing the proposed technology would be financially feasible.

 DATA ANALYST:

The leading job in modern times is the job of data analysis. A good knowledge of SAS,

SPSS can help you to get this type of job with a marginal ability in the fields of Mathematics.

After M.Sc in Mathematics, if you take some courses on SAS then it will help you to make a

career as an analyst.

 ACTUARY:

The actuarial field is one of the most common industries in which math grads find

work. Actuaries use their extensive knowledge of mathematics and statistics to calculate and

manage risks for insurance companies. Their job is to figure out how likely it is that an event

will occur, how expensive the event would be, and how policies can be developed to

minimize the risk of the event.
